In its next step towards establishing an ecosystem for Standalone (SA) dedicated 5G, TM today announced that it has entered into a collaboration with Huawei Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd (Huawei) on Interoperability Test programme focusing on Standalone (SA) dedicated core infrastructure architecture. The interoperability tests which will be conducted at TM's 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) sites in Langkawi, Kedah will include features and functionalities of network sharing among telecommunication service providers in the country. The success of this interoperability test represents a significant milestone on the path towards accelerating the anticipated commercial 5G deployments in the later part of 2020.

Commenting on the collaboration, Dato' Noor Kamarul Annuar Nuruddin, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM said: "We are pleased to continue working hand in hand with a leading global player such as Huawei to accelerate the offering of 5G services to Malaysians. TM's collaboration with Huawei will help accelerate the future of 5G, with end-to-end solutions from the network, to the cloud, to the client. Towards this end, TM with the support from Huawei experts, are also setting up the 5GDP network in Langkawi as an incubation centre for other telco players, businesses as well as local enterprises to utilise the network and test more 5G use cases on top of the existing 11 use cases that have been deployed. Thanks to the TM SA dedicated network architecture deployed in Langkawi, new enterprise use cases and business models will be made possible as we are progressing with this 5GDP programme, beyond traditional connectivity and mobile broadband services. The success of the interoperability tests which will be conducted by TM and Huawei will not only lay a foundation for large-scale commercial launch of a multitude of new innovative 5G use cases, it will also promote the industry's end-to-end 5G SA dedicated core's commercialisation efforts spanning networks and devices. As an active participant in 5GDP, we are extremely excited to see that our joint efforts have opened up the pathway for business models and use cases yet to be experienced. We will continue to deepen cooperation with various collaboration partners to carry out more tests and commercial verification as well research and development products that meet the 5G standards together with our technology partners as well industry players to promote rapid maturity of the ecosystem, to lay a solid foundation and prepare for the future 5G commercialisation and upcoming 5G era - strengthening our position as Malaysia's 5G Infrastructure Provider."

"This latest joint effort with Huawei represents an important milestone and demonstrates significant progress in the journey towards 5G deployment in the country," Dato' Noor Kamarul said, adding that it is an important step towards the commercial use of 5G in full scale later in the year. "It is key to ensure a smooth multi-tenant commercial network rollout by performing series of interoperability tests among technology providers during this demo project." Interoperability, he added, "will play a significant role in driving new business opportunities for telcos as the industry is focusing on the next generation services spanning autonomous driving, smart factory, smart farm, and augmented reality / virtual reality brought about by the accelerated deployment of future 5G network, applications and solutions for Malaysian homes, businesses and beyond."

Meanwhile, Michael Yuan, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei said: "Huawei would like to extend our sincere appreciation to TM for the opportunity to collaborate in an effort to explore 5G technology and the potential to realise the digital economy, Industrial Revolution 4.0 and bringing enhanced connectivity to all Malaysians. As a leading global ICT solutions provider, our core business value lies in customer centricity – customising our solutions based on clients' needs. In working together with them, we help them succeed in achieving their ICT goals. We look forward to bringing our 5G technology leadership in supporting TM to realise more use cases promoting ecosystem synergy with device makers, chipset makers and vertical industry partners."

The 5G interoperability trials aims to enhance cooperation among telcos, equipment and device manufacturers as well as vertical industry partners, create a unified 5G industry chain from chips and terminals, to network infrastructure and test equipment and build an integrated 5G ecosystem. The TM – Huawei collaboration is seen as a key step toward realising that goal. The success of the tests which will be conducted by TM and Huawei will significantly promote the industry's 5G end-to-end commercialisation efforts spanning networks and devices. The interoperability assessment is said to be one of the final stages in verifying the validity of 5G SA data transmission, signifying that the SA system is ready for commercial service launch.

TM and Huawei had earlier in October 2019 announced a collaboration on exploring a working mechanism to cover spectrum, business case, ecosystem and key technologies towards empowering Digital Malaysia.
